EU-Funded Initiative Bolsters Workers Rights in Debre Berhan, Equips Labor Unions
2025-12-28 12:56:49
A significant stride has been made in strengthening the voice of industrial workers in the Debre Berhan region, thanks to a targeted project by GEFADO. With financial backing from the European Union (EU) and coordinated by Welthungerhilfe (WHH), the initiative is actively promoting workers rights across ten local factories. A cornerstone of the project is the empowerment of labor unions, recognized as vital advocates for fair wages, safe working conditions, and collective bargaining. To address a critical operational hurdle, the project has directly furnished these unions with essential office equipment. The support, valued at over 600,000.00 Ethiopian Birr, includes desks, filing cabinets, chairs, and fundamental stationery materials. This tangible investment is more than just material aid; it is a boost to institutional capacity. Union representatives on the ground have confirmed that the donation has effectively resolved persistent shortages of basic office supplies, which had previously hampered their administrative efficiency and day-to-day operations. \"Before this support, even simple tasks were a challenge due to a lack of proper furniture and materials,\" shared a representative from one of the beneficiary unions. \"This equipment allows us to organize better, serve our members effectively, and focus on our core mission of protecting workers\' rights\". The initiative underscores a shared commitment from GEFADO, the EU, and WHH to foster dignified work environments and promote social dialogue within Ethiopia\'s industrial sectors. By strengthening the foundational capacity of labor unions, the project aims to create more sustainable and equitable labor relations in the Debre Berhan area.\r\n\r\n\r\nAbout the Project:The workers\' rights promotion project is implemented by GEFADO, funded by the European Union, and coordinated by Welthungerhilfe (WHH).
